March 26, 1943: "For what is believed to be the first time in the history of the Cibola national forest, a woman will act as fire lookout this year at the McGaffey lookout tower.
Mrs. Richard Clawson, a resident of that vicinity for many years has accepted this appointment, and will serve during May, June and July when fire hazards are usually greatest.
Twelve lookouts have been appointed in the entire forest for this year, all of them men except Mrs. Clawson, and most of them with previous experience in that capacity." (The Gallup Independent)
May 3, 1947: "Three fire lookouts are now manned in the Cibola forest area and three more will be staffed by May 15. The lookout at McGaffey is manned by Garland Willcoxsin." (The Gallup Independent)
