June 22, 1940: "Manuel Vigil, 25-year-old Pecos forest service worker, lost part of one ear and suffered severe burns when struck by lightening Thursday on the peak of Glorieta Baldy, eight miles from Pecos.
An uninjured fellow worker, Fred Markey, held Vigil on the top of a forest service lookout, which they had been shingling, until other could lower him to the ground. He was brought to a Santa Fe hospital, where his condition was described as serious." (The Gallup Independent)
