July 16, 1930: "Felix Spence, 42, fire guard on the Bly Ranger District southwest of here, is lying in a local emergency hospital, his condition considered serious as the result of injuries received when he was struck by lightning yesterday afternoon.
Spence had been on duty at Blur Ridge look-out and had started to the station for dinner, when a heavy rain storm came up. He sought shelter from the storm under a tree, and it was while standing thare that a bolt of lightning struck, passing through his body and coming out at the bottom of one foot.
He was knocked unconscious but undoubtedly was revived by the cold rain and after considerable effort was able to reach his telephone. Fortunately Ranger Eastburn R. Smith was at home, at Bly Ranger Station, received the call for help and went to his rescue, while in Long Valley, Forest Ranger Will J. Brown also heard the call and hurried to Spence's aid.
Ranger Smith brought the man to this city where he is now under the care of a special nurse and a local physician. Although his condition is considered extremely serious, he has a chance for recovery, it is said." (Winslow Daily Mail)
