January 6, 1938: "The Grand Mesa Forest is being used by increased numbers of recreationalists. One of the most interesting developments completed during 1937 is the shelter house and lookout located on Lands End, the western most projection of Grand Mesa, which is now accessible as a result of a road recently completed. The road branches off U.S. 50 at Whitewater and ascends to the summit of Grand Mesa thru a series of spectacular switchbacks. From the summit one can see practically all of western Colorado, from the White river country in the north to Lone Cone and the Miguel Mountains and Uncompahgre Peak in the south." (Aspen Daily Times)
