July 22, 1939: "Early this spring a 30-foot tower on Boulder hill, 5,400 feet high, two miles due west of Rockerville, was built. William Grover is the lookout. It will be manned during the entire fire season. There is a 14 by 14 foot living quarters on top of the tower.
Although the peak is nearly 2,000 feet lower than Harney, the lookout was established to spot fires in the extensively used areas south of Rapid, Spring and Battle creeks." (Rapid City Journal)

August 5, 1939: "Three new stations have been established during the past season. Elk Mountain, Boulder Hill, and Summit and others are being considered. The new stations are of all steel construction. Some of them are 67 1/2 feet in height, with a seven by seven square cab built at the top for an observation tower, and others are 30 foot steel towers, with a 14 by 14-foot square cab, providing living quarters for the attendant." September 3, 1947: "A lookout at the Boulder Hill tower telephoned the county sheriff's office at 11 o'clock and reported the presence of white smoke just north of the cement plant. The sheriff's office, in turn, notified the state police radio tower here. Game Warden E.E. Allgier and Harland Means, big game survey director, went to the scene.
Allgier reported back by radio that the fire, employed to burn off excess grass near the railroad tracks, was being controlled by a group of men." (Rapid City Journal)
September 16, 1958: "So far, there have been no bad fires in the Hills this summer. A man-caused fire started near Pactola Reservoir two weeks ago, but burned only two acres.
The fire was spotted by the Boulder Hill Lookout, and farmers, ranchers and others fought it out with gunny sacks and shovels and even sleeping bags." (Huronite and The Daily Plainsman)
March 9, 1961: "Withdrawal from appropriation, except under mineral leasing laws, has been ordered on 550.69 acres scattered through the Black Hills National Forest.
Most of the land is in tracts of 10 to 40 acres used for fire lookouts." Included in the order: Boulder Hill lookout. (Rapid City Journal)
