July 4, 1924: "Willis Bitmore, fire lookout on Mangas mountain in the Datil national forest, was killed instantly Thursday when lightning struck the cabin in which he and a companion were taking refuge from the storm, according to a message received at the district forest office Thursday evening.
Bitmore's companion was rendered unconscious for about fifteen minutes and found Bitmore dead when he recovered consciousness. The lightning had put the telephone line out of service and the companion rode five miles to the ranger station where he secured to repair the line and send word of the tragedy to Magdalena."
