June 9, 1939: "A steel fire lookout tower, 110 feet high, is to replace the Dutch Joe lookout tree, eight miles south of Wallace Ranger station. This tower will supplement the Promontory lookout tower. Both are in the Big belt of ponderosa pine." (Winslow Mail)
September 17, 1939: "A new lookout tower is being constructed at the Dutch Joe ridge, south of Winslow near the Dutch Joe ranch, the Sitgreaves forest office announced this week.
Fred Merkle, supervisor, said the tower will be 100 feet high and constructed of wood.
The CCC camp at Chevelon canyon is building the tower. It is a new style arrangement. A two-room cabin will be built at the base for a caretaker.
Dutch Joe Ridge is about 60 miles south of Winslow." (Winslow Mail)
1940: A plan CT-1 timber tower 99-feet high with a 7x7 wood frame cab constructed on private property that adjoins the National Forest. The tower replaces an earlier tree lookout.
June 16, 1944: "Virdia Haught, rancher, is in charge at Dutch Joe lookout, on the Chevelon district south of Winslow. His homestead is located just north of the forest boundary in that locality. He has been employed by the Forest service during the past several seasons." (Winslow Mail)
June 15, 1956: "The Dutch Joe lookout station, two lumber camps, and a ranch which earlier had been reported endangered by the blaze were still intact Friday at noon, it was reported. The lumber camps had been evacuated to avoid possible entrapment of personnel." (Arizona Daily Sun)
