August 8, 1959: "The Senate by unanimous vote Friday approved a bill to add 3,400 acres of land to Utah's famed Zion National Park.
A companion bill is ready for House floor action which indicates the legislation soon will be headed for the White House for enactment into law.
The Senate measure, sponsored by Sen. Wallace F. Bennett (R-Utah) would facilitate boundary adjustments which the Interior Department says would "facilitate the preservation, protection and administration of spectacular geological features and make them more accessible to visitors."
One addition of 1,480 acres would make possible the preservation of a terraced lava field and also provide lands needed for an access road to the Lava Point Fire Lookout Station." (The Salt Lake Tribune)

November 21, 1976: "Following six months of investigation the FBI has filed charges of theft of government property against David Lee Covell, 23, Las Vegas.
The charges stem from the May 9 break-in of the Lava Point Ranger Station in Zion National Park.
Stolen at that time were a stove, binoculars and radio repeater unit and other items that were valued in excess of $2000. Covell was charged November 5, according to senior resident agent for southern Utah Joe Cwik.
Covell will appear before the U.S. Magistrate in Las Vegas for preliminary hearing soon, an FBI spokesman said. He also indicated that theft of U.S. government property in excess of $200 is punishable by 10 years confinement or $10,000 fine or both." (Color Country Spectrum - St George)
