June 6, 1913: "On the Sitgreaves National Forest, the headquarters of which are at Snowflake, over $6,000 has been expended, largely for the purpose of connecting ranger stations and lookout points with the Supervisor's office, in order to afford communication in case of fire.

June 12, 1914: "Supervisor Jennings made a trip to Willow Wash Ranger station and Deer Spring Lookout tower Wednesday and Thursday for the purpose of making the connection with the new Indian Service telephone line to Cibicue, and to obtain the range of effectiveness of the lookout. It is expected that the Indian Service line will be in use within a few days. This will give thorough connections to Whiteriver." (The Holbrook News)

May 24, 1940: "The veteran fire guard on the Sitgreaves National Forest is Ivan S. Williams, who is now occupying Deer Springs Lookout Tower for his 20th consecutive year. Deer Springs Lookout Tower is located about 10 miles southwest of the town of Clay Springs and is within a few hundred yards of the north boundary of the Apache Indian Reservation. Williams discovered many fires on the Indian reservation as well as in the national forest. He also is responsible for reporting by telephone the occurrence and progress of all fires to the forest supervisor's office in Holbrook, so that additional assistance can be obtained if needed."
