August 7, 1925: "Frank C. Arner, fire lookout on the Tonto national forest,, was struck by lightning while on duty July 30, is 'game,' according to reports received by the forest office here. Though both of his feet were burned badly, Arner insisted that he was able to go to work. He was badly shocked by the lightning. Arner was on McFadden peak when he was struck." (Albuquerque Journal)
July 9, 1926: "Randall Alexander, fire lookout at McFadden peak in the Tonto National forest, was stunned last Wednesday during an electrical storm, when a bolt of lightning struck the lookout house and tower where he is stationed, according to information received here by T.T. Swift, supervisor of the forest.
The galvanized iron station and tower is equipped with lightning rods, but the bolt struck with sufficient force to stun the fire guard. He had practically recovered the next day and returned to his duties.
Electrical storms have been unusually frequent this year in the forest, 18 fires having been started in one ten-day period by Lightning." (Winslow Mail)
July 16, 1948: "Charles Rapson, Winslow high school science teacher, who is spending his summer as a lookout for the U.S. Forest Service at McFadden Lookout near Globe, returned to Winslow briefly this week.
He reports the forest fire situation very serious in his area, and says forest officials see no real relief from the dangers of continued fires until some rain falls on the forest." (Winslow Mail)
